About Anna Kournikova
Tennis star Anna Kournikova was born June 7, 1981 in Moscow, and picked up her first tennis racquet at age five. By eight, she was appearing in junior tournaments, and by 10 she signed a management deal and moved to Bradenton, Florida to train.
Anna exploded on the tennis scene and became the youngest player ever to win a Fed Cup match at 14. By the end of the year, she won the ITF World Champion. Anna turned pro in 1995, and went on to win two ITF titles. Her tennis success continued, and in 1998 she broke into the WTA’s top 20 rankings for the first time.
While she continued competing in singles, Anna also partnered with Martina Hingis and won the Australian Open doubles championship in 1999 and 2002. Anna reached a career high ranking of No. 1 in doubles in 1999 and No. 8 in singles in 2000. But plagued by injuries, the tennis star was forced to retire in 2003.
“Well, injuries to my back and foot really impacted my ability to play at the level that I wanted to play. I did not want to just go out there with anything less than 100 percent,” Anna told TennisServer.com. “The foot injury happened first and I had to have a screw put in, which is still in there. That caused me to have to start walking differently, and then I had two herniated discs in my back; I forget which vertebrae, but it was in the lower back (lumbar area). On top of all that, I had a sciatic nerve problem.”
Anna continued to play in exhibition and charity tournaments. But her good looks attracted just as much attention as her on-the-court talent. Anna appeared in a number of magazines, including FHM and Maxim. She was named one of People’s Most Beautiful People in 1998 and posed for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in 2004. In addition, Anna appeared in the 2000 film Me, Myself & Irene, and in 2010 she became a celebrity trainer on the reality TV show Biggest Loser.
Romantically, Anna has previously been linked to NHL hockey players Pavel Bure and Sergei Fedorov. In 2001, she began dating music star Enrique Iglesias. “She’s my girl and best partner in all my adventures.” Enrique Iglesias told Life & Style magazine in 2014.
