About Ariel Winter
As a key character on one of the country’s most-beloved, long-running TV shows, Ariel Winter seems like she’s grown up in front of our very eyes. Like a friend or a sister. Like someone we’ve known for so long. But she and Alex Dunphy (her character on Modern Family, which has won three Screen Actors Guild awards) have just as many similarities as differences.
Like, her family was crazy, too—but not in a comedy-sitcom way. For reasons she doesn’t discuss in much detail, her sister became her legal guardian before she later emancipated herself completely.
She and her character dress differently. “Alex dresses like a tomboy. I’d describe my look as girly-edgy,” Ariel told Teen Vogue. “I like black nail polish and eyeliner, but I’ll wear them with pink shoes.”
On the other hand, they’re both smart. “I have a strong work ethic like Alex,” she told Backstage. “I’m always practicing lines, researching, trying to be fresh, and fully trying to become the characters I play. That’s how I roll. I also love Alex, because she’s a role model who’s teaching kids you can still be cool and be a nerd.”
Outside of her Modern Family fame, Ariel has a long list of credits that include The Chaperone, for which she was nominated for a Young Artist Award, and as the voice of Sofia on the children’s show “Sofia the First.”
She told Backstage that she’d love to play a kick-ass, Lara Croft-type character in an action movie someday, and for Andy Samberg to appear in a cameo on Modern Family with her.
Ariel recently had breast-reduction surgery (which caused quite a media outburst), broke up with boyfriend Laurent Claudette, a musician and music producer, and started attending UCLA to study law. “I was put in the industry when I was four,” she told People. “I love what I do, but I don’t know if it’s a choice I would have made on my own.” So we may just see her trying her hand at something new.
