The NoFap subreddit is a forum where, among other things, redditors share stories, tips, etc. about abstaining from porn, masturbation and orgasm for extended periods of time. They also share the effects that doing so or not doing so tends to have on their lives.

According to Pando Daily, 1,500 members of the community recently filled out a survey, which was analyzed by a man named Sam Deford and his team of researchers.

Deford found that compulsive porn watching can can affect relationships, sex drive and sexual performance.

Here are some other interesting bits of information culled from the survey, via GQ. And I’m not going to lie to you: some of these hit close to home.

  1. Porn addicts saw arousal decline with the same mate, while those who were out there sleeping around were able to continue their arousal. This is due to something called the Coolidge Effect, a facet of novelty-seeking behavior. Basically, porn makes it very easy for fappers to get off to something new and different every time they fire up their computer, making it less exciting to bang out the same person on the regular.
  2. One out of five regular porn watchers admitted to feeling controlled by their own sexual desires.
  3. 12 percent of the group members say they watch five or more hours of online porn every week, while 59 percent said they watch between four and 15 hours of porn every week. 15 hours! That’s a lot of porn.
  4. About 50 percent of the NoFap members said they’re virgins. There may be something to constant, unfettered porn access dissuading you from going out into the world and pursuing the real thing.
  5. 42 percent of male college students report visiting porn sites regularly. My own life experience leads me to believe that this number is in accurate. It’s probably definitely more than half.
  6. More than half of the NoFappers started watching porn regularly between 12 and 14, and 16 percent were even peeping it before they were 12. (If you have offspring, you should probably look into parental controls.
  7. 64 percent report that their taste in porn has become more extreme or deviant. Which makes sense, I guess. Nobody really starts out with, like, the really weird stuff you can find out there.
  8. 19 percent of the 27-31 year olds on NoFap suffere from premature ejaculation. 25 percent are disinterested in sex with their partner. 31 percent have difficulty reaching orgasm. And 34 percent experience erectile dysfunction.
  9. After committing to abstaining from masturbation/porn, 60 percent of those on NoFap felt that their sexual functions had improved.
  10. After ditching the porn, 67 percent of the members who filled out the survey had an increase in both energy levels and productivity.

So there you have it. Maybe some of us should make a resolution to watch less porn in 2015. Or something.
