Ever since the fall of Detroit took down America’s favorite V10 engine, the Viper has been a name only whispered in dealerships, race tracks and on the road whenever one of its late-model brethren made an appearance. A legacy car for both aficionados and race fans, the Viper has held a special place in every man’s heart as a speed demon that represented a patriotic dream of a car: one that was not only an all-American hot-rod, but that could confidently stand amongst European and Japanese models garnering awe, applause and, most importantly, respect.

In the car world, where Germans openly laugh about our muscle cars and the Japanese bathe in tubs the size of our gas tanks, American carmakers have always been the butt of any international joke about the design of a car. That is, with the exception of the Viper…

Last April, for the first time since 2009, a Viper was announced to the public and with it, a new American sports car legend was born: the 2013 SRT Viper GTS.

Releasing alongside the 2013 SRT Viper, the newly designed GTS utilizes a massive all-aluminum 8.4-liter 10-cylinder engine that delivers an unbelievable combination of 640 horses and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, giving this speedster the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car in the world.

Dodge’s Street & Racing Team (SRT) has done a fine job of introducing the latest weight-reduction applications into the vehicle that has improved its power-to-weight ratio threefold. The chassis has been redesigned for stability, giving the car a 50-percent increase in torsional stiffness to help push the GTS to its limit. This is in addition to the two-mode active suspension which will allow this new performance driver to reach new heights, so to speak, on the road. An announced GTS-R racing variant for American Le Mans will definitely make use of this option! The Viper uses a seven-inch full-color instrument panel with options for an additional digital speedometer under the tach.

The gorgeous exterior of The Snake uses an all-new hybrid skin comprised of carbon fiber and aluminum and is optimally sculpted for a slim drag coefficient of .364 cd. Combined with the optional track package that features StopTech rotors and Pirelli Corsa tires, this is going to be one hell of a ride!
