Some celebrities will do anything to stay in the public eye—whether they’re posting nearly-nude Instagrams of themselves or having fake relationships with their costars. Selena Gomez doesn’t have to fake it, because her life is fascinating enough on its own. Yesterday, she surprised her followers with an Instagram post revealing that she had a kidney transplant over the summer. She shared a photo of herself and her friend Francia Raisa side by side in hospital beds, alongside a post thanking Raisa for donating her kidney.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. That wasn’t the only time in the past year that Gomez surprised her fans. Last November, she made her first public appearance in months at the American Music Awards, and gave an emotional speech in which she explained that she had been in rehab, because she was “absolutely broken inside.” She said, “If you are broken you do not have to stay broken.”

Gomez also stepped behind the camera in 2016, teaming up with her mom to executive produce 13 Reasons Why for Netflix. She’s already famous as a pop star and actress, but why should she stop there?

In March, she did a deeply personal interview (and sultry photoshoot with Mert and Marcus) for the April issue of Vogue, which featured her on the cover. She talked about her time in rehab, and said, “You have no idea how incredible it felt to just be with six girls, real people who couldn’t give two shits about who I was, who were fighting for their lives. It was one of the hardest things I’ve done, but it was the best thing I’ve done.” The Vogue interview showed Gomez at her most open and honest, and it included some of the hottest photos ever taken of her.

In June, she released the ‘70s-inspired music video for her song, “Bad Liar,” which had a surprising cast: Gomez plays all of the main roles, both male and female.

In July, she got totally weird in the music video for “Fetish,” directed by her friend Petra Collins—including this moment when she bites into her lipstick:

This summer, she also celebrated her 25th birthday, and said she thinks this next year is going to be “epic.” Considering how much she accomplished in the past year, she’s probably right.
