We’re nearing the launch of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, the reboot/prequel to developer DICE’s 2007’s parkour game, and it seems there soon will be a non-video game version of the series’ story as well.
According to a report from Deadline, production company EndemolShine Studios snagged the rights to develop a Mirror’s Edge TV show, which, like the game, will be an action-adventure story featuring a woman lead. It sounds like it’ll hew pretty close to what DICE has established in its games, with a quasi-techno-future setting in which a city is dominated by a freedom-destroying corporation, and the only way to avoid the surveillance state is with “runners,” or super-awesome parkour couriers who use the rooftops to avoid authorities.
From the Deadline story:
“We clearly see Mirror’s Edge as a franchise for the global TV audience,” said Sharon Hall, President of Endemol Shine Studios. “It has a strong female protagonist, a wildly rabid fan base and a worldwide brand that Electronic Arts and EA DICE have done an amazing job establishing.”
So far, things are extremely preliminary for a Mirror’s Edge show, so there’s no word on when we can actually expect to see any of these TV ideas take shape. Meanwhile, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is on its way to store shelves on June 7. Above you can check out the launch trailer, which gives a sense of how fast the game is and how often you’re going to be looking down at a deadly drop of hundreds of feet. Which is constantly.
