When you’re waiting for a flight, do you find yourself checking out other passengers at your gate, secretly hoping the hot ones will sit near you on the plane? A new app called AirDates wants to make it easy for you to connect with fellow travelers. Bring on the Mile-High Club jokes. But really, if you fantasize about getting it on in a really tiny bathroom, AirDates might just help you meet someone who shares that desire. Think right place at the right time.
The app uses multipeer connectivity, so as long as you have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, you don’t need an internet connection. You can upload your flight itinerary ahead of time, and start chatting before you’ve even boarded the plane. If your match turns out to be creepy, you can block them—but, of course, they’ll still be on your flight, so maybe save this for shorter trips.
This writer would be hesitant to try AirDates for that exact reason. She once got such a high score on a plane-wide trivia game that two big (really mature) dudes got jealous and approachd her seat midflight to check if she was cheating. A funny situation, but it’s easy to see the potential for a flirty chat to turn uncomfortable when you can’t exactly get up and leave. (On the plus side, at least your fellow air passengers are unlikely to be carrying weapons. Or identified liquids, for that matter.)
AirDates CEO Michael Richard told Engadget he believes the inside of a plane is the “safest place to have a date” because there are so many other people around. The app is available in the Apple Store, and the busy holiday travel season could be the perfect time to find high-altitude love, or at least arrive at your destination with a good story.
