The mere mention of the word Italy brings to mind a certain kind of edge. Werther it’s hot models like Melissa Satta or one of those bold print silk shirts by Versace, nothing quite stirs the senses like the things born and bred in Italy.

In many regards, the popular European republic has come to define its own space in the world of what’s hot. And the all-new 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia builds on that idea in a rock-star worthy automobile that makes you completely rethink your idea of a mid-size sedan.

Note, that’s a sharp departure from some of the conversations we’ve had previously at the Playboy offices where a four-door car has had a tough time even earning a spot on our top ten “would-do” list. I mean, let’s be honest–unless you absolutely need the extra room, most probably would never opt for a sedan over a hot new coupe. But after having a chance to wheel the new Giulia in and around Napa Valley, we walked away with a completely different take on the idea.

Coming on the heels of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the Giulia builds on everything we’ve come to love about Italian “cultura,” being that it’s:

Bold…

Unapologetic…

And quick to let you know that a classic, breathtaking look should never be mistaken for being timid.

The top-of-the-line Giulia Quadrifoglio, which goes on sale in December, is by far the most exhilarating expression of that Italian appeal. Bearing Alfa’s iconic four leaf clover, the halo model entices you with a growling, 505-horsepower bi-turbo V6 engine that helped the sedan earn the fastest ever recorded lap time around the Nürburgring for a four-door production car.

The more tamed Giulia and Giulia Ti models, which make their road debut in early 2017, come equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-charged engine with 280 horsepower. But don’t be fooled, when the Ti model is packaged with Alfa’s available all-wheel-drive system, it gives off a little attitude as well.

What’s not to like? Well, some of the car’s interior touch points could use a little more of that premium craftsmanship we’ve come to expect from Italian designers. However, for anyone who’d written sedans off as boring, the Giulia is proof that a one-piece swimsuit can be just as sexy as s two piece, if nicely wrapped around the right package.

That said, we’ll have to wait until Alfa releases the official pricing for the sedan to assess how it really measures up to a hot coupe.
