Alison Brie was always meant to carry her own show. You could see it any time her character her own moment on Community. Her time on Mad Men proved she can pivot from nerd to vixen to brain on a dime. Now he gets to shine on the grandest binge-watching stage of them all, as the star of Netflix’s new ‘80s wrestling series GLOW.
If that name sounds familiar, it’s because the series is based on the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling show that aired in synidcation between 1986 and 1990. Like the original show, the Netflix series (created by Nurse Jackie writers Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch) will follow a group of aspiring actresses, models, and other performers all looking for their big break and hoping this strange little wrestling promotion will give it to them. The original series featured a custom “Super Bowl Shuffle”-style rap for each performer, a commentator who was basically a Max Headroom rip-off, and Sylvester Stallone’s mom as a manager, among other things.
The first images from the Netfix version surfaced online Thursday, and while they don’t get into all the weirdness that comes with pro wrestling (yet), they did bring the leg warmers and '80s hair, as a diverse cast reminiscent of Orange is the New Black’s band of prison misfit tries to get in shape for the big show. In addition to Brie, the show also stars Betty Gilpin (Nurse Jackie) as Brie’s rival, and Marc Maron as the washed-up director trying to whip all of these ladies into shape, which just might be the role he was born to play.
