Not everyone was thrilled by Monday’s surprise firing of White House communications director, and professional background actor, Anthony Scaramucci. While the Twittersphere feted “The Mooch’s” swift demise, late night hosts had a much more solemn reaction. Why? Because despite the abundance of comedic fodder emanating from the White House on a daily basis, Scaramuccci was the Holy Grail.
Just ask Trevor Noah, who admitted how all in he was on the former Wall Street executive. “I just bought the Scaramucci 2017 jersey, what the hell people?” he asked his Daily Show audience. “I haven’t even finished my Scaramucci tattoo,“ he said. "Now it just says ‘Scar.’ What am I supposed to do with another Scar tattoo, huh? I’ve already got one from The Lion King. Now I’ve got two of them.” To pay his respects, Noah aired an “In Memoriam” in honor of Scaramucci, dating from “July 2017” to “Slightly Later July 2017.”
Seth Meyers meanwhile, wasted no time looking ahead at who might replace Scaramucci as White House comms director. “How do you top Scaramucci?“ the Late Night host asked. "Would it be an air horn with chest hair? A lasagna with a switch blade? A Monster Energy drink with googly eyes?”
Meyers also looked back on Scaramucci’s many accomplishments during his time in the White House. “But just think about that Scaramucci got [former White House Chief of Staff Reince] Priebus fired, and then he got fired two days later,” Meyers said. “That’s like telling someone ‘see you in hell’ and then literally showing up in hell the next day.”
But perhaps the late night host who took Scaramucci’s departure the hardest was Stephen Colbert, who admitted that he was “a broken man” and “shocked by this breaking nooch.”
“I’ll tell you though, as shocking as this is, as hard as this has been on Scaramucci, it’s been harder on me, okay? The Colbooch,“ Colbert said.
He did manage to give The Mooch credit for accomplishing at least one of his goals while in the White House. "He said he was going to fire everybody and I got to admit he delivered.”
