Ariana Grande was picking up food with her boyfriend Mac Miller on Tuesday night when they had an upsetting encounter with one of Miller’s fans. As the couple were getting in the car, the guy allegedly told Miller, “Ariana is sexy as hell man. I see you, I see you hitting that!”
Grande shared a message on Twitter expressing how his words made her feel. “I am not a piece of meat that a man gets to utilize for his pleasure. I’m an adult human being in a relationship with a man who treats me with love and respect.”
While she has sometimes avoided questions about her personal life in the past, Grande felt a responsibility to go public about her recent experience. “We need to talk about these moments openly because they are harmful and they live on inside of us as shame. We need to share and be vocal when something makes us feel uncomfortable because if we don’t, it will just continue. We are not objects or prizes. We are QUEENS.”
In follow-up tweets, she wrote, “Expressing sexuality in art is not an invitation for disrespect!” and “You are literally saying that if we look a certain way, we are yours to take. But we are not!!! It’s our right to express ourselves.”
All of which confirms a Grande theory we floated out there earlier this year.
