Ariel Winter is over being body-shamed, over being criticized for dating an older guy, and over the way the press manipulates everything she says into a salacious, clickbaity headline. In a new Refinery 29 interview, which features gorgeous photos of Winter by Danielle Levitt, she talks about everything from her body image issues to her girl crush on Chrissy Teigen, and she makes one thing very clear: She doesn’t care what other people think of her.
Winter told the magazine that she used to try to change herself to make her haters happy, but that people found reasons to criticize her no matter what she did. “I decided that instead of pleasing these other people, I’ll just spend that time pleasing myself. Those people are going to be rude to me regardless of what I do, so I should just try and be happy with what I am.” The Modern Family star urged her fans make the same choice, so they can stop worrying about what they look like in a bathing suit, and focus on having fun.
“Whether I want to go natural or with makeup or in sweatpants, that’s up to me. People are so stressed out about how they’re going to look in their bathing suits that they forget to go to the beach because they want to go to the beach, which defeats the whole purpose. The beach should be a safe space.” — @arielwinter Learning to accept herself has been tough for #ArielWinter, the actress was on Modern Family when she was 11, meaning puberty and all of the awkward stages of teenagedom happened before millions of eyes. She learned to deflect the hoards of commenters who always criticized her body or shamed her for showing off her curves. Yesterday, she shared an image from the Refinery 29 shoot on Instagram, accompanied by what she called a “rant” about how her interview had been misconstrued by the press. She reiterated her message about body positivity, and said, “The point was to take back the beach and help people understand that the beach should be a safe space to go as you please and feel good about yourself no matter what!”
Y'all I love you but PLEASE pay attention and post my REAL point from my @refinery29 interview!!! Not that I’m "defending living with my 29 year old boyfriend" or that I’m "firing back at Trump" because first of all I don’t need to defend anything I’m super happy and in love, and I’m not firing at anyone just sharing an opinion after being ASKED! The point was to take back the beach and help people understand that the beach should be a safe space to go as you please and feel good about yourself no matter what! Makeup on, makeup off, heels, sandals, covered up, exposed, do you and feel HAPPY about who you are and YOUR choices, not the ones society wants us to choose. It’s also HARD to be 100% confident- I’m still not- but I’m on a journey and I want other people to know they’re not alone. We all struggle but through our struggle we get stronger and closer to our goals. Body positivity is important- not that I live with my boyfriend. Press- please read the article and take it for what it is- not what will give you more readers! Let’s all be real and represent people how they want to be represented through what they actually say. Rant over. Love yourselves, love others, be yourselves, and be happy. Xo
While Winter is correct that the media is always looking for its next juicy headline, I hope her criticisms aren’t directed at Playboy. We admire the way she uses social media to stand up to her critics and express her feelings. We also love the way she looks, so we’ll end this with a few pics of the 19-year-old actress showing off her “beach body” at the actual beach last weekend:
