Proponent of both body positivity and body art Ariel Winter shared a photo of her bare right hip on Snapchat over the weekend, offering fans a closer look at one of her latest etchings. The message reads, “Love risks everything and asks for nothing” in Greek. It’s a reappropriated quote from Rumi, the Persian philosopher and poet. Winter had previously given her Instagram followers a few peeks at the tattoo, as in this shot from April, when she posed on the beach with her boyfriend, actor Levi Meaden.
Winter and Meaden share a few his-and-hers tattoos. They each have half of a heart inked at the base of their thumb, so that when they press their hands together, it forms a whole heart. They also have finger tattoos depicting their nicknames for each other, peanut butter and cheese. Adorable!
Last year, Winter told ET, “I love getting tattoos. I think it’s a super fun way of expressing yourself. I only get tattoos that are really meaningful to me and I love it.” She has a tattoo of the spade symbol from a deck of cards on her wrist, in memory of her grandmother who taught her how to play poker.
On her ribcage, Winter has a list of initials that represent each of her nieces and nephews.
My second and most special tattoo, the initials of five of the most important beings in my life: my nieces and nephew. Their initials are on my ribcage, on the side where my heart is. They are my inspiration, and my reason for living. Love these babies more than anything and proud to have their initials forever on my body. Inside her left elbow, she has the date October 3, 2012 tattooed in Roman numerals to represent the day she moved out of her abusive mother’s house to live with her older sister, Shanelle Workman-Gray.
On her left forearm, she has a slithering snake. It’s unclear what this one means to Winter, but traditionally, snake tattoos are a symbol of healing and rebirth, which would make sense after everything the actress has been through.
That’s not Winter’s only animal tattoo. She also has a tiger’s head tattooed on her back. She told ET she got that one as a symbol of protection. “I’ve always felt like I’ve been a protector for other people, and I’ve always had these amazing protectors in my life.”
The above list includes everything Ariel Winter has tattooed on her body at the moment, or at least every tattoo she’s revealed on social media. Considering how much she likes this form of expression, this list will probably need updating in the near future.
