An army veteran is being hailed as a hero after being shot seven times while attempting to subdue the perpetrator of yesterday’s mass shooting in Oregon.

Thirty-year-old Chris Mintz, a student at Umpqua Community College, charged at gunman Chris Harper-Mercer in attempt to stop the massacre which killed 10 people. Despite being wounded numerous times, none of the bullets struck any of Mintz’s vital organs. Family members say both of his legs were broken in the attack, but he is expected to recover.

“He could have very easily died,” Wanda Mintz, the victim’s aunt, told a local Fox affiliate. “I really think that if he wasn’t such a strong, young guy, he may have died.”

Previously, Mintz has spent ten years in the U.S. Army, but had recently moved to Oregon to help raise his son, who had just turned six.

“It’s my son’s birthday, it’s my son’s birthday,“ witnesses heard Mintz saying as he waited for help to arrive.

According to the gun-control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, this was the 45th shooting at a U.S. school so far in 2015, and the 17th specifically on a college campus. It was the 142nd school-shooting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012.
