I always wondered what happened to Bam.
I was a rowdy goofball only a few years younger than the pair, and I watched Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, and their Jackass friends have access to chaos I only dreamed of. It looked like the life to any young American male.
So when Dunn died in a 2011 drunk-driving accident, I, like many former Viva La Bam viewers enthralled with such exciting comradeship, worried what that would mean for Margera, to lose a very public best friend very publicly. Substance abuse, as suspected, followed, and it got bad. Margera lost the world. A spiral like that strikes in every direction, ricocheting off friends and family, until finally there’s at least a hint of new direction.
Margera’s back on television, a focal point of the new VH1 series Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn, where the skater’s on the still-rough inclined path to, what everyone hopes is, a good place. I honestly can’t imagine going through the years he did and I’m rooting for the dude to see better ones ahead.
