A few months after Batman and Superman are done beating the crap out of each other in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we get a different kind of DC Comics-inspired movie: Suicide Squad. Written and directed by David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch), the film will follow a group of antiheroes and supervillains coerced into doing black ops work for the U.S. government. They’re not superheroes. They’re not even necessarily nice people, but they do know how to kick some ass, and an action director like Ayer could make this the best, or at least the most interesting, comic book movie Warner Bros. has to offer.
We got our first evidence of how big and bold Ayer’s willing to go with this flick last month, when he revealed a picture of Jared Leto’s tatted-up Joker, and now it’s the rest of the cast’s turn. The photo above is our first look at the entire Suicide Squad (known in their original form as “Task Force X”) assembled and in costume, including Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who aside from the new Joker might be the most anticipated character in the film.
Now, if you’ve read up on this film already, or if you’re into comics, you might already recognize some of these faces, but if you don’t, here’s a handy left-to-right guide:
Slipknot (Adam Beach), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Robbie), Deadshot (Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez).
Yes, Killer Croc really is going to be in a major motion picture. I’m as surprised as anyone.
Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5, 2016.
