“The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back.”
“They” being Cloud, Barret, Sephiroth and presumably all the rest of the characters from beloved PS1 classic Final Fantasy VII. The trailer above played during Sony’s late-in-the-day E3 press conference today, and was met with the loudest cheers I’ve ever heard at one of these things.
FF7 is being remade on PS4, for real this time. Thankfully this isn’t like when they showed a fake demo of a hi-def FF7 running on PS3 and then had to explain later that no, the game wasn’t being remade; or like last year when they announced a PS4 version of the game that’s really just a straight port of the old school PC version (and which never actually came out for some reason).
If they’d told us back in 2006 to “give it another nine years or so,” fans probably wouldn’t have been happy, but given how much better this teaser looks than that old PS3 demo, it might have been worth the wait.
It’s not yet clear how drastically the game will be changed—or even when it might be coming out—but the game will arrive “first on PlayStation,” meaning a PC or even Xbox One release may also be in the cards.
Final Fantasy VII is loved by many, and a remake is one of the most-requested games in existence. Along with The Last Guardian and Shenmue 3, it made Sony’s E3 2015 press conference a very special one for longtime PlayStation fans.
