Now that Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 graphics engine is free and anyone can grab it, lots of would-be developers are using the opportunity to try updating the graphics of old classics.
YouTuber Jude Wilson turned his high-fidelity graphical sights on one of the most influential shooters ever, the Nintendo 64’s Goldeneye 007, based on the James Bond movie of the same name. The result is a strong desire to play a game that marked many a childhood with after-school four-player shootouts, and house rules that no one was allowed to pick Oddjob.
The level is Facility, the best level in Goldeneye’s multiplayer as well as during the story campaign, which Wilson says he recreated by combining the original layout from the game with what’s shown in the film on which it’s based. Of course, Goldeneye got an official remake in 2010, but that one replaced Pierce Brosnan Bond with Daniel Craig Bond and updated all the nightmare-inducing faces found in the original, and it’s just not the same.
