New York City’s Coolest Menswear Stores

New York City’s Coolest Menswear Stores:

New York City has a lot of cliché nicknames. It’s the city that never sleeps, the Big Apple, Gotham, the city so nice they named it twice, and that place with all those dirty water dog carts. (That last one hasn’t really caught on so well.) It is also the fashion capitol of the United States. As such, it is home to some great menswear shops. Sure, there are large retailers such as the Ralph Lauren mansion on Madison Avenue and the J.Crew Liquor Store on West Broadway. But there are also a ton of great boutiques stocking items you aren’t going to find in a catalog.

We rounded up the coolest independent menswear boutiques in NYC. If you’re visiting the city anytime soon, these stores need to be part of your agenda.

Carson Street Clothiers
63 Crosby St., New York, NY
carsonstreetclothiers.com
Yes, it’s a little confusing that Carson Street Clothiers is not actually on Carson Street. But let Google Maps help you navigate to this boutique that stocks top brands from around the world such as Billy Reid (U.S.A.), Drake’s (England), and Visvim (Japan).

Those hard-to-find Japanese labels with cult followings are easy to find at Gentry. From basics like an Engineered Garments hoodie to a Nanamica trench coat to a Junya Watanabe sweater, a trip to Gentry is much easier than a trip to Tokyo.

J. Press York St.
304 Bleecker St., New York, NY
jpressonline.com
J. Press has been a preppy staple on Ivy League campuses since before the Kennedy’s were at Harvard. Now those classic styles have been refreshed and slimmed down in the York St. collection designed by Ariel and Shimon Ovadia. Regardless of your SAT score, you can always get into the flagship location.

Supreme
274 Lafayette St., New York, NY
supremenewyork.com
Lines of hypebeasts stretch around the block when Supreme drops its latest collection. But the items that a non-teenage boy would want rarely sell out. You can always find great jackets, jeans, and button downs that are built to last. It’s also worth it to swing by just to see the latest skate video.

Brooklyn Denim Co.
85 North 3rd St., Brooklyn, NY
brooklyndenimco.com
A place with “denim” in its name better have good jeans, and Brooklyn Denim Co. lives up to its moniker. The shop carries top small-batch brands like Baldwin, Tellason, and The Stronghold and has a ton of different styles to choose from.

Freemans Sporting Club
8 Rivington St., New York, NY
freemanssportingclub.com
The trouble with Freemans is that all your wardrobe seems somehow not worthy after you step into their shop and see their fine selection of suits, shackets, and overcoats. It isn’t a lot of stuff, it’s the right stuff. And you can even get your hair cut or a nice shave at the barbershop next door.

Saturdays Surf NYC
31 Crosby St., New York, NY
saturdaysnyc.com
You could pick up a surfboard or grab a latte and enjoy it on their backyard patio, but make sure you also check out Saturdays’ namesake collection, which includes oxford shirts, T-shirts that are just the right weight, boardshorts that aren’t too long or too short.
