David Denson has become the first openly gay active player for a MLB-affiliated team. A first baseman for the Helena Brewers, the Milwaukee Brewers’ rookie team based in Montana, the 20-year-old came out in a less-than-predictable way, even for him.
After being jokingly labeled with a homophobic slur in the locker room, Denson replied “Be careful what you say. You never know.”
Shortly after, Denson announced the truth to the team, who answered with total cheerful support. As Denson tells it, “They said, ‘You’re still our teammate. You’re still our brother. We kind of had an idea, but your sexuality has nothing to do with your ability. You’re still a ballplayer at the end of the day. We don’t treat you any different. We’ve got your back.’”
