In a press release that you probably aren’t able to read without Google Translate, Burger King Japan announced today that they’ll be selling candy-apple red “Aka burgers” (“aka” or 赤 means “red”) in beef and chicken.
They aren’t skimping on the red either, as the burger will come with red cheese, tomatoes, and a fiery red sauce made from miso and chili peppers. Burger King says that the red color comes from tomato powder, because sure, anyone eating red burgers from Burger King is worried about that.
If you’re wondering why any of this is happening, know that these crimson burgers are actually part of a larger annual promotion that Burger King Japan has run every summer for the past few years for a special black burger that actually looks worse than you would imagine.
But hey, this year it comes with fried eggplant, so it can’t be all bad.
As of this time BKJ has no plans to release the burger stateside, but I’ll bet that if you bury a Whopper in enough ketchup and squint you wouldn’t be too far off from the real thing.
