The Casting Merry-Go-Round: The Rock and Baywatch, Joaquin Phoenix and Marvel

The Casting Merry-Go-Round: The Rock and Baywatch, Joaquin Phoenix and Marvel:

It’s been a busy week for Hollywood casting, or, at least, those publishing revelations about Hollywood casting.

Marvel fans will likely feel some sort of way about the news that Joaquin Phoenix (Her) will not be taking on the role of comic book hero Dr. Strange for the studio. Phoenix was reported to have been considering the potential franchise part earlier this year.

Because, apparently, no one in America can be bothered to see foreign films except Harvey Weinstein, The Weinstein Company is going ahead with plans for an English-speaking remake of the award-winning French movie The Intouchables. Kevin Hart (About Last Night, Think Like A Man) is now attached to play the role originated by Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past)

In more, ‘No, nevermind’ news, Leonardo DiCaprio is no longer in line to play Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic that Scott Rudin is producing from a script by Aaron Sorkin. Rather than play one of history’s foremost visionaries again, DiCaprio will “take a lengthy break from acting.” (Incidentally, you know who looks a bit like a young Steve Jobs? Joaquin Phoenix. I’m just saying…)

And, finally, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is “loosely attached” to a Baywatch update. We all know reboots are a dicey proposition. But, with kitsch currently all the rage, and Johnson really coming into his self-mocking, comic chops lately, the best case scenario here could be a surprisingly funny 21 Jump Street type of affair. Of course, let’s wait and see who gets cast in the Pam Anderson part. My money’s on Olivia Wilde and an overachieving prosthetics team.
