Out of the core group of Marvel’s Avengers, Thor is kind of like the forgotten stepchild. Maybe it’s his faux-Shakespearean way of speaking, or his alien roots, but the Norse God of Thunder has two of the least successful standalone movies in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That’s likely to change later this year, when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters. Based on the first trailer, Marvel has managed to reinvent the gloomy franchise by infusing it with bright colors, a playful eighties aesthetic, and a sharp new haircut for Chris Hemsworth’s hammer-wielding hero. Man, this looks like a lot of fun.

The playful new direction comes courtesy of oddball New Zealand director Taika Waititi, whose last film, Hunt for The Wilderpeople, was a charmingly offbeat adventure comedy that revealed Waititi as someone with a unique vision.

That vision is on full display in the trailer, as Thor squares off against Cate Blanchett’s Hela, a.k.a the Goddess of Death, who after destroying his home, banishes him to the planet of Sakaar. There, he does his best Russell Crowe in Gladiator impression, when he comes face to face with The Hulk in a battle to the death, all for the personal amusement of one Jeff Goldblum. We told you this looks fun.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin all make appearances, in what just became our most anticipated super hero movie of the year. Thor: Raganrok hits theaters on November 3. Watch the trailer above.
