It feels like it’s been months of everyone saying, “Channing Tatum’s gonna be Gambit…I think…right?” Well, that’s all done now. The Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street star is officially going to play everyone’s favorite explosive card-throwin’ Cajun charmer.
Inking the deal took a while, due to Tatum and 20th Century Fox having some difficulty working out the actor’s compensation as well as his total involvement in upcoming projects. There’s hope of turning Tatum into the next Hugh Jackman, a dependable key player in the franchise, able to bounce from ensemble cast in the main films to carrying his own spinoff series. Jackman, by the end of his beastly run, with X-Men: Apocalypse and the third Wolverine flick on the way, will have starred as Wolverine in a total of nine movies.
The two characters have already crossed paths on screen before, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, when Gambit was portrayed by Taylor Kitsch (who’s now weirdin’ things up on True Detective).
The film’s set to be directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Gambler, The Escapist) for an October 7, 2016 release.
