“At last we have the mighty Chewbacca.”
That line from Return of the Jedi was hopefully uttered by at least one of the Ukrainian police officers who arrested the Universe’s most famous Wookiee in Odessa on Sunday.
Chewbacca (or more accurately, the man inside a Chewbacca costume, if you you want to be a jerk about it) was taken into custody at a Ukrainian polling station after police claim he became disruptive while campaigning for Darth Vader. He was charged with not having proper ID, and was later fined $7.50.
Letting him go with a fine was a wise move. After all, Jabba the Hutt tried to keep him as a prisoner, and we all know how that ended.
A statement from the Ukrainian police said:
Nothing unusual here, just Chewbacca detained for being without documents while driving Darth Vader to the elections in Odessa. The Sith Lord has already claimed this was illegal as Chewbacca is his pet and general servant and thus does not require documents.
A group of several men affiliated with Ukraine’s Internet Party have legally changed their names to “Darth Vader,” and have made a habit of running for elected office while dressed as the famous villain. According to the Guardian, 16 of the Vaders took part in last year’s parliamentary vote.
