Chris Hemsworth looks like Ron Howard’s new Tom Hanks. After collaborating on the 2013 racing drama Rush, the actor/director team decided to have another go with In the Heart of the Sea. Like Rush, it’s a true story, and it looks intense as hell.

Hemsworth is the first mate aboard the Essex, a whaling ship that suffered a horrible catastrophe in the Pacific Ocean in 1820. The fate of the Essex and its crew ultimately inspired the classic novel Moby Dick, and there are certainly shades of that story here, particularly Hemsworth’s slow discovery that he’s not dealing with an ordinary animal. Add in a supporting cast that includes Cillian Murphy and our new Spider-Man, Tom Holland, and you’ve got what looks to be a must-see.

In the Heart of the Sea arrives in December.
