Last summer Chris Pratt became a movie star, rocketing into the pop culture stratosphere as the embodiment of irreverent cool in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. This summer he’s trying again with Jurassic World, and while he’s in the unenviable position of trying to breathe new life into a franchise that hasn’t seen a new installment in more than a decade, he seems poised to pull it off.
Nowhere is that clearer than in the just-released first clip from the film, in which Owen Grady (Pratt) does some casual work on his motorcycle (offering us all tickets to the Gun Show while he’s at it) while park manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) tries to have a serious conversation with him about the safety of the park’s new, genetically engineered dinosaur (which she refers to as “the asset”). Grady, of course, would rather talk about the time the two of them went on an awkward first date, or the “mutual respect” he’s developed with his Raptor buddies, and the result is a fun exchange between a laid back adventurer and a bureaucrat who’s maybe wound just a little too tight. It’s not that far removed from the best moments between Han Solo and Princess Leia, and it makes me want to see this movie more than any footage in the trailers did.
Jurassic World hits theaters June 12.
