The ending of “Dark Knight Rises” was a bit polarizing.

It shows Alfred spotting Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle hanging out at a café in Italy, after the audience was led to believe that Bruce had died in the Batwing when he took it out to sea to explode Bane’s bomb a safe distance from civilization.

Some believed the ending to be real. Others thought it was a dream Alfred was having.

Entertainment Weekly asked Christian Bale about his take on the ending. He does not believe it was a dream, and he believes that Alfred did not make contact with Wayne and Kyle after seeing them at the café.

Bale’s words:

“[Alfred] was content with me being alive and left because that was the life he always wanted for him. I find it very interesting and with most films, I tend to say ‘It’s what the audience thinks it is.’ My personal opinion? No, it was not a dream. That was for real and he was just delighted that finally he had freed himself from the privilege, but ultimately the burden, of being Bruce Wayne.“
