It’s been 38 years since Christie Brinkley first appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1979. The all-American supermodel was also the cover model in 1980 and 1981, and she has been featured in the magazine many times since. Brinkley turned 63 on February 2, and she returns to the Swimsuit Issue this year, posing with her two daughters, Alexa Ray Joel, 31, and Sailor Brinkley Cook, 18.

The longtime model admitted to People magazine that she was reluctant to do the shoot, but agreed to give it “One last go!” because her daughters were involved. Brinkley sees doing a swimsuit shoot at 63 as a way to fight ageism. “In a country that’s very ageist, people love to put you in little boxes. Women feel very limited by their numbers. On a personal level, I thought, if I can pull this off, I think it will help redefine those numbers and remove some of the fear of aging.”

Brinkley’s oldest daughter, singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel, shared one of the images from the shoot on Instagram, writing, “This was a lesson in learning to let go, take the plunge, and embrace myself from both the inside AND out- which is something I struggle with each and every day. My purpose is to now pass along this lesson of unconditional self-love and self-respect to every woman who’s willing to listen.”

Joel’s half-sister, Sailor Brinkley Cook, is following in her mother’s footsteps as a model. She is signed with IMG.

Brinkley told Sports Illustrated that posing with her daughters was emotional for her. “How many years ago, I was that insecure girl hoping that I would be good enough for the magazine. So to see my daughters now having the same thoughts I had, and to be able to see them actually be there on the job, was definitely a big moment.” Here’s a peek behind the scenes as the three women posed together:
