Did you know that there are runners who crave garlic and oregano in the middle of their marathons? According to Clif Bars, those humans exist, so the company has created four new energy shots with that strong-stomached athlete in mind.
Clif’s new flavors are Pizza Margherita, Sweet Potato with Sea Salt, Banana Beet with Ginger, and Banana Mango with Coconut. The sweet flavors sound enough like smoothies to be appetizing, but the savory pizza flavor (tomato paste, quinoa, olive oil, garlic powder, oregano and basil) gives us cramps just thinking about it.
The gels are organic, gluten-free and vegan and have the consistency of thick baby food. Supposedly the squeezable purées are easier to digest while exercising than whole foods, more substantial than a gel, and they fight palate fatigue. Clif recommends consuming one to two pouches per hour, which means if you’re sucking down the pizza pouches on schedule, by the end of a four-hour bike ride you would have about 34 ounces of tomato paste swishing around in your gut.
