San Diego Comic-Con came to a deafening crescendo over the weekend, with a tsunami of new trailers, clips, photos and anything else you might expect from the next year or two of blockbusters. So to help you catch up, here are some of the best trailers that dropped at the con.
Next year, Warner Bros. Pictures will finally give Wonder Woman her own movie, and though we’ve already seen Gal Gadot’s portrayal in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans are particularly excited for her to go solo. The trouble is, the current incarnation of DC Comics films (which includes Dawn of Justice and Man of Steel) has divided fans and critics alike, so many of us were wondering: Will Wonder Woman be any good? Well, unless this trailer is extremely deceptive, the answer is yes. It seems like director Patty Jenkins knocked this thing out of the park.
KONG: SKULL ISLAND
Next year also brings with an attempt to form a shared monster universe over at Legendary Entertainment that will, we hope, culminate in a battle between King Kong and Godzilla. Godzilla already made his American return in 2014, and now it’s Kong’s turn with this prequel, which follows an expedition (including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman and Samuel L. Jackson) to the great ape’s legendary home. It’s supposed to be a routine look around, but the crew learns one harsh truth very quickly: Monsters are Real.
After Batman v Superman, many fans wondered if director Zack Snyder would finally lighten up a little bit and show us more of the adventurous, light-hearted side of the Justice League. In this teaser, the League finally assembles, and it looks…fun! Ben Affleck is charming as Bruce Wayne and Jason Momoa is a badass, but the real star here is Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash. I hope those scene-stealing tendencies carry over into the final film.
For a while, we’ve known that director Adam Wingard (You’re Next) was working on a little horror film called The Woods, and that’s kinda all we knew. At Comic-Con, Wingard and company surprised everyone with the reveal that The Woods is actually a direct sequel to 1999’s seminal found-footage horror film The Blair Witch Project. It follows a group of friends as they journey into the Black Hills of Maryland in an attempt to uncover what happened to the original Blair Witch documentarians 15 years earlier, and it looks downright creepy.
THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE
After the pleasant surprise that was The LEGO Movie, Will Arnett’s scene-stealing Batman is getting his own joint alongside Alfred, Robin and the whole gang. We don’t talk about a lot of animated flicks around here, but I’m an Arnett superfan, and this trailer again manages to provide a pitch-perfect send-up of the Dark Knight’s terminal self-seriousness.
Marvel Studios screened a lot of footage for their Comic-Con crowd, including first looks at Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but unfortunately the only thing they’ve released to the public is the new trailer Doctor Strange, the mysical superhero adventure starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. Lucky for us, it’s a pretty damn good trailer, complete with magical emblems, a really cool cape, and magicians that can warp entire cities with a single gesture. This one’s going to look and feel like nothing else Marvel’s ever done. Plus, it ends with a pretty great joke.
