What’s Coming and Going on Netflix in January: Jon Favreau's Chef

Jon Favreau's Chef

If you’ve been wondering what to do with your holidays, then Netflix has a suggestion: watch more stuff. There’s a whole mess of content disappearing from the streaming service at the start of the year, so now is your last chance to finally revisit the animated G.I. Joe series, or get around to that Beethoven and Beethoven’s 2nd marathon you’ve been thinking about. But don’t worry — there’s also a lot of great new material showing up, including a couple of last year’s best movies (and the second season of one of the best new crime dramas around, too). Here’s a quick look at the best of the new stuff, as well as the movies that will be disappeared from your queue verrrry soon.

ELECTION
With the 2016 election edging ever closer, there’ll be no getting away from politics next year. That makes Alexander Payne’s smart, bitter comedy about a high school election even more worth watching — watching Reese Witherspoon’s brittle Tracy Flick try to annihilate Chris Klein’s charming-yet-stupid Paul Metzler is like watching a Presidential race in full swing, with Matthew Broderick’s teacher Jim McAllister standing in for the American people. Think of it as political inoculation.

GET LOW
Based on a true story, the immediate draw of this little-known 2009 movie is its cast list, which includes Bill Murray, Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek — but the story, about a recluse who decides to throw his own wake before his death — will quickly grab your attention, especially when the recluse decides to come clean about just what happened to make him so withdrawn from the rest of society…

FRANK
If nothing else, you have to hand it to Michael Fassbender for his commitment to a role that hides his exceedingly-handsome head under a papier-mâché mask for the entire movie — but there’s a lot more to Lenny Abrahamson’s charming, off-kilter biopic of the real-life Frank Sidebottom than Fassbender’s dedication: some amazing music, and great performances from Domhnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhaal, to start with.

THE FALL (SEASON 2)
First off, if you haven’t watched the first season of this Irish drama — think Prime Suspect, but with Gillian Anderson and The Good Wife’s Archie Panjabi — then you should definitely start with that. The show’s second season picks up almost immediately after the first, and keeps up the pace as Anderson’s police superintendent continues to hunt for a serial killer who’s escaped her reach. Things don’t end well, but that’s part of the joy of the show.

CHEF
Not only is this food porn Jon Favreau’s best movie in years — he wrote, produced and directed it, as well as playing the lead role — but it plays like Favreau’s managed to level up as a filmmaker, keeping the A-list cast of his blockbuster movies (Robert Downey Jr.! Dustin Hoffman! Scarlett Johansson!) and regaining the focus of his earlier, indie work. If you don’t end up wanting more, and also wanting to go eat immediately, then you’re doing it wrong.
