There’s nothing more frustrating than being stuck in an airport for an extended period of time against your own will, especially when the only attractions that are near you are a screaming child and a Panda Express.
Thankfully, there are some airports in the world that have specifically incorporated design and incredible amenities to alleviate some of that flight delay pain. At least if you’re stuck in an airport, it’s nice to at least have something pretty to look at, right?
Here’s nine airports around the world we wouldn’t mind being stranded in.
An airport with its own brewery?! I could easily enjoy a few flight delays here.
CHANGI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
It has a pool (with swim-up bar), a 4-story thrill ride, multiple gaming stations, music video booths and an on-site movie theater. You win, Changi.
If being stuck in an airport terminal really isn’t your thing, visitors at Zurich airport can actually rent bikes, skates or walking poles at the airport to explore miles of protected trails and marshes.
HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Yep, there is actually a nine-hole golf course at Hong Kong airport that is up to USGA standards right outside terminal 2. It also comes equipped with a Thai restaurant and a clubhouse.
JOHN F. KENNEDY AIRPORT
You don’t have to head to Madison Square Garden to hear live music in the Big Apple. JetBlue’s ‘Live From T5’ in the airport has been producing a concert series within the terminal for fliers to enjoy.
ADOLFO SUAREZ MADRID-BARAJAS AIRPORT
This is one of those airports where if you’re a design nerd, you’re really going to be into it. It’s newest terminal, T4, combines bamboo with a metal skylight roof.
HARTSFIELD-JACKSON ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
There’s nothing worse than being stranded in an airport and having to sleep on those uncomfortable ass chairs (been there done that, got a lower back problem.) So the fact that the busiest airport in the United States incorporated sleep rooms (and sleep pods!) for guests is a genius idea.
CHICAGO O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Chicago’s airport just does it right in terms of design. It’s hypnotizing to walk around in, believe me.
WELLINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The Rock at Wellington International Airport in New Zealand has literally one of the most unique designs in the world. The lounge is composed of mosaic wooden panels, and has rightfully earned itself several design awards.
