Any travel experience is almost entirely about what ridiculous hotel you stay at. And if you’ve been booking only Marriotts, you are doing it all wrong. For the less faint of heart, there’s a handful of one-of-a-kind hotels around the globe that go beyond the average bed and breakfast. So if you like chilling at the bottom of a dark cave or sleeping on a bed made entirely of ice, these 12 crazy hotels will speak to the badass traveler in you.
1. ATTRAP REVES
What It Offers: Have you ever wanted to sleep under the stars without actually having to sleep out in the middle of the woods with bugs, heat and animals to deal with? The Attrap Reves let’s you spend the night in nature, but on a comfy bed surrounded by a large bubble to protect you from the elements, while still experiencing them. There are five locations across France located in every sort of terrain so you’ll never get tired of the views.
2. SALA SILVERMINE
What It Offers: If a skyline view isn’t your thing, the Sala Silvermine offers a Batman-like experience with the world’s deepest hotel room. You’ll stay in a beautiful cave completely underground, but don’t worry, they keep it warmed up to a toasty 64 degrees for you.
3. THE OVERWATER SUITES
Location: The Maldives Islands
What It Offers: This is how you do a tropical vacation. The line of villas stretch across the water so you don’t just have an ocean view; you’re in the ocean. You can jump straight from the front porch of your villa into water so clear you can see straight to the bottom. It’s safe to say it’s a little better than your annual trip to Tampa.
4. THE OBEROI AT UDAIVILAS
What It Offers: This isn’t just a hotel; it’s a chance to live like an emperor. The Oberoi Udaivilas is considered one of the finest hotels in Asia with personal pools, marble interior, and a style that looks like it should be reserved for only royalty. Good luck finding a better view than looking out your window and seeing the beautiful Lake Pichola outside of every window.
5. ASCHER CLIFF HOTEL
What It Offers: If you don’t mind the hike, this is one of the most amazing views you could ever experience. The Ascher Cliff Hotel and Restaurant is located a little more than 1.5 miles up the side of the mountain and takes around three hours to reach, but the mountain view surrounding it is something you’d never get at a Best Western.
6. LA VILLA HAMSTER
What It Offers: Why would a hotel have hamster in its name? Oh that’s because it’s a giant version of a hamster cage. Your room will feature a large wheel, a water spigot and a bed covered in wood chips that you can only access by crawling through a narrow tunnel.
7. JUMBO STAY
What It Offers: Just outside of the Stockholm Arianda Airport is a stay that could only be described as unique. It’s a jumbo jet transformed into a hotel, because there’s nothing you want to do more after a long day of flying than get off the plane and climb directly into another plane.
8. THE ICE HOTEL
What It Offers: The entire hotel is built solely out of ice and snow. You may have heard of others, but this is the original and the biggest. Since the ice doesn’t last year round, artists come in annually and recreate the hotel in a completely different way. If you’ve ever wondered what the opposite of a tropical vacation would be, this is it.
9. THE HOTEL PRESIDENT WILSON
What It Offers: The Royal Presidential Suite has 12 rooms, a private elevator, and a helipad. This isn’t the suite you book for a family vacation. With bulletproof doors and windows throughout the entire suite it’s obvious that this room is reserved for the wealthiest individuals in the world and the price definitely reflects it at around $65,000 per night.
10. PROPELLER ISLAND
What It Offers: It doesn’t get much more bizarre than this one. Each room is designed as some strange, unique work of art that features such amenities as coffin beds, a room decorated entirely with mirrors, and another one where you get to sleep in a cage. How relaxing!
11. DAS PARK HOTEL
What It Offers: Instead of destroying these large drainpipes, a group in Germany turned them into a truly unique overnight experience. The pipes have fully functioning doors and are actually much more ascetically pleasing than you’d imagine. Best of all, you can name your own price for staying in them. Trust me, you’ve stayed in much worse.
12. CONRAD MALDIVES
Location: Rangali Island
What It Offers: Not only does it have the world’s first all-glass undersea restaurant, it also features underwater rooms surrounded by glass so you can watch aquatic life swim all around you as you lie in your bed. Hopefully Deep Blue Sea isn’t available on demand while you’re staying there.
