Until now there had been no public acknowledgment of Bowie’s illness, a fact that makes his death all the more shocking. Last Friday, on his 69th birthday, the artist released his latest album, Blackstar. According to CNN, the album reached No. 1 in iTunes in the U.K. and No. 2 in the U.S. and was also well received by critics.
“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer,” read a statement posted on his social media accounts. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
Bowie’s son, director Duncan Jones, also confirmed his father’s passing.
