To the dismay of many, I watched the U.S. adaptation of The Office first and could barely stomach it. Steve Carrell’s brilliant turn as Michael Scott shredded my nerves with anxiety. Then I decided to watch the original U.K. version, as friends told me how much better it was, explaining it as a drier, more awkward version. The idea floored me. How could that be? But then I met Ricky Gervais’s David Brent and that was it. Off the TV went. I couldn’t do it or I’d have a heart attack. Now the uncomfortable monster is back in David Brent: Life on the Road to mess us up with a cringe-fest all over again.
