Anyone who greets the reunion of innovative collaborators David Byrne and Brian Eno jonesing for a new-millennial sequel to 1981’s game-changing My Life in the Bush of Ghosts will miss the point of this studio tête-à-tête. Not that this isn’t an awesome headphone record. The percussive thwacks that open “Wanted for Life” sound like the Gap Band on horse tranquilizers. The distorted rhythm bed that underscores “Poor Boy” is as giddy as it is disorienting. And the free-jazz piano skittering across the electronic pulse of “I Feel My Stuff” makes a perfectly chilly complement to Byrne’s soulful meditation on postmodern life. Yet even the funkiest experiments can’t quite put the project over the top. Byrne sounds more often depressive than thrillingly manic, opting for draggy ballads that tend to emphasize how mannered his vocals are. The sentiments are sometimes lovely, as on the Ray Davies-like “Life Is Long,” and the creative energies shed a handful of sparks. Unfortunately, though, this sounds like much ado about an ordinary midlife crisis. Nothing much happens that hasn’t already. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mar 19, 2010
