‘Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’ is on the Brink of Cyborg-Human War

Things are getting heated and segregationy in the upcoming installment of the Deus Ex series.

In a world where “mechanical augmentations” are fundamentally altering the capabilities of certain humans, some people aren’t super comfortable. It’s not just amputees or people with birth defects that are replacing limbs and organs in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: it’s anybody who feels like it’d be cool to have a bionic arm or sunglasses built into their face.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the game that rebooted the Deus Ex series in 2011, got into some of this territory. That game had a lot to do with a drug that helped people’s bodies keep from rejecting their augmentations (and the implants necessary to make them controllable by the brain), and there not being enough of it. And it ended with a worldwide disaster in which augmented people were hacked, went crazy, and started murdering people.

So lots of people in the world are not super stoked about the whole mechanical augmentation idea, as the trailer above shows. Deus Ex is also about shooting stuff, conspiracies and the Illuminati, so like, perhaps take these political rumblings (and the still tone-deaf and unfortunate name “Mechanical Apartheid”) with a grain of salt. Still, it’s going to be a messed up world to run around in when players start breaking up conspiracies when Deus Ex: Mankind Divided drops on Aug. 23.
