Hey Internet! Get your pitchforks!

This past Friday, which happened to be the 14th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Devo co-founder Jerry Casale married a woman named Krista Napp. You probably didn’t hear about it because no one besides the attendees really cared… until now.

TMZ is reporting that the 9-11 wedding featured a cake shaped like the World Trade Center towers. You know, the buildings that were struck by hijacked aircraft on 9-11, resulting in thousands of dead New Yorkers? Yeah, that World Trade Center.

The wedding also featured box cutter party favors. In case you’d forgotten, at least some of the terrorists who hijacked the aforementioned planes are thought to have used box cutters as weapons while subduing the passengers and crew (maybe). Get it? Get it?

Needless to say, the Internet is not too happy.

See, I provided one random Tweet as context, so there must be widespread outrage!

However, Casale is now telling TMZ that he had nothing to do with the cake or box cutters, and that one of his friends was behind it all. That’s weird, I didn’t know that Devo was friends with Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Guests at the wedding told TMZ that Casale has a “dark and strange sense of humor,” and one went on to describe him as a “super sweet guy.” That may be true. And it’s perfectly believable that one of Casale’s friends was actually behind the sick joke. It’s also perfectly acceptable for friends to make sick, tasteless jokes among themselves… in private.

But if you’re a celebrity (or used to be in the early 80’s), it’s probably a very bad idea to stand next to a 9-11 cake in a room full of people with cameras.
