For some men, sending a dick pic after an innocent introduction on a dating app is par for the course. “If she likes it, she’ll reply; if she doesn’t, she won’t. No big deal,” goes the thinking of that one guy who always thinks it’s necessary to send images of his genitals next to a can of Red Bull to verify length and girth. According to a survey from Match.com, 50 percent of women say they’ve received an unsolicited dick pic, and that’s a tad excessive. I mean, come on, guys. Half of women?

Despite the prevalence of this universally detested form of flirtation so many women experience, a few underground online societies are now popping up offering collections of said pictures for public and consensual enjoyment because some people actually appreciate—like really appreciate them—and their anonymity.

Sites like Tumblr, Twitter and Reddit all feature Dark Web-esque forums buried deep within their massive online estates that host thousands of dick pics purely for viewers’ pleasure. A 24-year-old woman named Ashley, for instance, recently told Broadly, “90 percent of what I look at [when I masturbate] is dick pics. I don’t like porn because I have to see the men’s stupid faces, whereas with a dick pic, I can imagine whatever I want or even find a dick pic that looks like my boyfriend’s.”

Underground forums like these offer a healthier outlet for men to explore their interest in exhibitionism, and for some men, it’s the consensual nature of these sites that attract them. Robbie, 34, is an avid poster on a number of subreddits and Tumblr blogs. “I have never wanted to send an unsolicited shot of myself naked, and have always posted my nude pics on sites like Tumblr,” he said. “It’s a lot more fun if people seek you out and like your pics.“ Twenty-one-year-old Ben agreed, attesting he gets validation and arousal from those who excitedly compliment his junk. In fact, some women get so into the explicit content that they comment with fantasies they envision having with the veiny members on their screens.

Men like Robbie believe dick-pic forums are sex- and body-positive environments that expose women to a number of real penises with visible flaws, unlike the picture-perfect dicks they see in porn. "What I like is that they aren’t fancy, made-up porn dicks that are not realistic,” another dick pic appreciator told Broadly. “Some of these guys are very flawed and human, and I love that. From birthmarks to beer bellies, they mimic men that I have and will sleep with, so it’s easier for me to relate.”

Testimony from the men behind the dick pics reveal that their submissions are appreciated and the comments are overwhelmingly positive. “The majority of the reception is warm and inviting,” a moderator of a dick appreciation subreddit tells Broadly. “I’d [say] 98 percent-plus of the comments are about how nice the poster’s member is and what the commenter would like to do with it.”

In fact, one Tumblr blogger even gets paid to critique dick pics and posts reviews on her site, CritiqueMyDickPic.Tumblr.com. The woman behind the blog, Maddie Holden, is so highly regarded she charges $10 per email review and $25 for a guaranteed review on the website.

While men’s reasons for sending dick pics vary from loneliness to the prospect of having a nude image sent back, sexuality educator Aida Manduley, MSW, digs a little deeper, explaining, “Unsolicited dick pics can be a lot like catcalls—ways to assert power, express entitled sexual interest, cut the receivers down to objects, center the sender’s own ego and prowess, get some rise or reaction out of another person.”

However, thanks to this new avenue for dick pic appreciation, which places the power of consent and choice in the hands of the viewer, the sender and recipient both reap benefits from the exchange. For the sender, it’s about having his dick worshipped by consenting parties. For the recipient, it’s to experience pornographic material that feels real and less fantastical. "It feels reclamatory or even feminist to [look at dick pics] when I feel like doing it, because it’s an act of choice and agency, unlike when unsolicited dick pics are sent to me,” said Kate. “Dicks are fantastic when I’ve consented to interact with them.”
