Next time you send a stupid meme mocking a politician, be thankful you don’t live in Turkey.
Doctor Bilgin Çiftçi is facing up to two years in prison for insulting the Turkish head of state. Specifically, Çiftçi posted a meme to his Facebook feed that compares Gollum from Lord of the Rings to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan:
While Çiftçi has already lost his job as a result of the charges, he may be able to avoid jail time. His lawyer, Hicran Danışman, is arguing that Gollum isn’t actually a villain, and in some respects, may be considered a hero. Therefore, comparing President Erdogan to the character really isn’t an insult.
As a result of the ingenious defense, the judge in the case has ordered an expert panel to review the film. As the Washington Post reports, “the group will comprise two academics, two behavioral scientists or psychologists and an expert on cinema and television productions.”
I was going to make a joke about the panel consisting of 72 virgins, but I have a headache.
The panel will reveal its findings when the court reconvenes in February. And in closing, here’s a stupid Obama/Gollum pic. It’s not very funny, but if I want to post it, that’s my god damn First Amendment right:
Obama was really trying out for Gollum role in Lord of the rings while in Alaska 😂 pic.twitter.com/YZHKyYCuAN— Sweetpea (@Sweetpea593) September 8, 2015
God bless America.
