The name Mike Pence: It conjures dread and disdain for many of us, especially because the governor of Indiana and soon-to-be Vice President of the United States is a guy who signed a law banning abortions for women carrying fetuses with major fetal anomalies, cut funding for Planned Parenthood in his state by 50 percent and voted to federally defund the nonprofit organization six times. The dude made sure Indiana closed a health center that was one county’s sole place for HIV testing—and an HIV outbreak followed. He also said, “I long for the day that Roe v. Wade is sent to the ash heap of history”—you know, with all those maliciously slain fetuses.
Now Pence’s name is getting intrinsically linked to Planned Parenthood in a way he definitely never wanted.
Thank him for the recent jolt in Planned Parenthood donations. Well, sort of. People are giving thousands of dollars under his name as a small but satisfying measure that’s going viral. Best Coast singer Bethany Cosentino posted the message to Instagram and Amy Schumer and Amber Tamblyn promptly reposted. Every time someone makes a donation in his name, a thank-you certificate is sent to Pence’s office, which should be at least vaguely annoying for him and his employees.
This isn’t really about getting petty revenge or fighting (just a little) dirty. It’s about not being a jerk—and sending a strong message to someone who’s made being a jerk his life’s work.
