Prison guards were forced to pepper spray inmates after a drone dropped a package filled with drugs into an Ohio prison’s exercise yard, resulting in a melee.

According to the Mansfield News Journal, the incident occurred on the afternoon of July 29 when an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) dropped 144.5 grams of tobacco, 65.4 grams of marijuana, and 6.6 grams of heroin into the Mansfield Correctional Institution. Prisoners immediately began fighting over the package, causing a near riot before security officers stepped in to control the situation.

After the fight was subdued, over 200 prisoners were “strip searched, run through the cell sensor, and clinic checked.” As a result of the fight, nine prisoners were also placed in solitary confinement.

Drones were also in the spotlight this past weekend after three planes reported seeing a UAV at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Although all three planes landed safely, officials say such incidents represent a real threat to the safety of air travelers.
