Much has been made of Sean Penn’s exclusive interview with drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Mexican authorities even claim Penn inadvertently helped lead them to Guzman, resulting in his eventual capture. But based on Guzman’s alleged text messages, the kingpin’s willingness to meet with Penn was just a means to an end, with actress Kate Del Castillo being the end in question.
A picture of Del Castillo can be seen in the following tweet:
According to transcripts provided by Mexican authorities, Guzman didn’t even know who Sean Penn was until Del Castillo asked Guzman about an interview.
“What’s that actor’s name?” Guzman’s texted.
He is even said to have asked his lawyers about what films Penn had made.
Guzman also seemed much less interested in the alleged movie project he was working on with Del Castillo than he was about seeing Del Castillo herself. At one point, he claimed he wanted to introduce the actress to his mother.
Here’s a sampling of the texts he supposedly sent her.
I’ll tell you, I am more excited about you than the [movie] script. I’ll take care of you.
How is the best and most intelligent woman in the world, who I admire a lot?
That one probably lost something in translation.
My mother wants to meet you. I told her about you.
I want you with all my heart.
Del Castillo was allegedly receptive to Guzman’s texts, and replied with some romantic messages of her own.
“Apart from our (movie) project, I am very excited about seeing you eye to eye, in person,” she supposedly wrote. “We will embrace each other soon!”
If the messages are authentic, at least one thing is clear: El Chapo is quite the romantic… as far as psychopathic drug lords go.
