Another week, another round of exciting trailers, and though the focus is increasingly on Marvel’s upcoming superhero flicks, they’re not the only game in town. We’ve also got the hottest film to come out of Sundance 2016, the latest from Nicholas Winding Refn, a team-up of Jason Bateman and Nicole Kidman, and more.
Check out some of the best trailers of the week below.
THE NEON DEMON
Nicholas Winding Refn’s intoxicating mix of violence, sex, and mystery has captivated us before with films like Drive and Only God Forgives. Now, he’s at it again, with a film about an aspiring model (Elle Fanning) and all the people who want to take what she’s got. Refn has a knack for turning brutality into gorgeous visual poetry, and he might just outdo himself here.
THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Nate Parker’s film about the legendary slave rebellion led by Nat Turner was the biggest hit to come out of Sundance this year, and based on this trailer it’s easy to see why. There’s loads of power here, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this film mentioned time and time again during the 2017 Awards Season.
THE FAMILY FANG
Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman are the children of two famous performance artists (Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunkett) who profoundly screwed up their kids by roping them into their projects. Now, as adults, the Fang children find themselves at the center of a mystery after their parents disappear under suspicious circumstances. Is it a real crime, or just some kind of stunt? We’ll have to live through every darkly comic moment to find out.
We’ve seen trailers for the next DC Comics adaptation before, but the latest – which arrived during last weekened MTV Movie Awards – delivers even more wicked fun. I’m not sure about Jared Leto as The Joker, but everyone else looks like they’re having a hell of a good time, and I’m very interested to see where this one goes.
Diane Kruger is a troubled woman on the run who meets an enigmatic man (Norman Reedus) as she’s flying a crime she didn’t mean to commit. Honestly, this particular trailer is rather vague on details, but it’s always nice to see Kruger get time in the spotlight, and Reedus is, as ever, winningly cool.
America has plenty of superhero films up its sleeve, so now it’s Russia’s turn. I…honestly don’t even know how to describe what the clip above is. I’ll only say that it feature a totally jacked dude with a bear’s head, and that’s not even the weirdest thing about it. This should be a blast.
