In his recent London bout, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos went down hands over his face following a direct knee to the face from Michael “Venom” Page. It’s always been a bit of a challenge to tell the difference between standard and severe in MMA fights, but this blow was something terrible to behold. Referee John McCarthy even told a commentator that it was the hardest knee he’d ever seen in 20+ years of officiating, and Joe Rogan deemed it the worst MMA injury he’s ever seen, period.
It may not have initially seemed that way, given Page’s rehearsed Pokémon-themed victory move. But it really is that bad.
That fierce, perfectly timed knee to the forehead fractured Santos’s skull. It straight up dented the forehead of a man who’s been through nearly 40 MMA fights. That’s why his ex-wife and fellow MMA fighter Christiane “Cris Cyborg” Justino has launched a campaign to hopefully crowdfund surgery. Page rooted for his opponent’s recovery as well.
PAGE: Evangelista Santos Cyborg is a legend and a true warrior. I am thankful to have had the opportunnity [sic] to have fought such a person and tested myself, I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery from his operation much respect
