Hopefully by now you’ve already filled out your taxes (if you haven’t, stop reading this and get busy.) Now, you’re hopefully just refreshing your bank account for that glorious tax return back. The average individual tax return in 2016 was $3,050. For those of us racked with college loans, or basically any recent college graduate working their way up the career ladder, seeing that kind of cash in your bank account makes you feel like you could light money on fire.
Past items I have used my tax return for: Coachella tickets, paying my mom back for something stupid I did in college and a of course, a bunch of various clothing items. I’m only partially happy with two out of three of those things. In the reality of adulting, our tax refund money isn’t THAT much money.
With that said, maybe we should be spending it wisely, and not blowing it on physical items you more than likely don’t need/won’t care about in four months (I don’t even wear that stupid top from American Apparel anymore.)
Why not take some of your hard earned, IRS cash and spend it on tangible experiences that you can enjoy with you know, other people?
A FLIGHT TO ICELAND
Have you heard about WOW air’s absurdly cheap flights to Iceland and Europe? Have you seen recent pics of Iceland? Their flights to Reykjavik, Iceland average around $300 from LAX and JFK. Use part of your refund to go this summer. Trust me.
TICKETS TO AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
Nothing is better than hanging with your crew at a summer music festival. If you already missed the neon-clad boat for Coachella and other early summer festivals, that’s fine. Austin City Limits (ACL) is in October, and always promises to be incredible with its diverse lineup and killer food trucks. You can buy a relatively well-priced day pass where you’ll see a ton of your favorite bands.
ONE NIGHT IN THIS HAWAIIAN TREEHOUSE
I don’t think I need to go into detail about why you should spend the cash to sleep in this ridiculously awesome treehouseon Airbnb.
GET YOUR CREW TOGETHER FOR LASER TAG
You adulted pretty hard to get this money back, so go be a kid for the day with your friends and find the nearest laser tag place near you. Plus, now that you’re of legal age, you can drink now so it’s ten times more fun than when you were 12.
COOKING CLASSES TO IMPRESS YOUR SO
Sur la Table has locations all across the U.S., and offers cooking classes that range from $50-$80. You can learn to cook everything from lobster to some fancy AF deserts. Plus, guys who know how to cook are more likely to attract women, according to my own study that I’ve been conducting for most of my adult life.
SUMMER FOOD FESTIVALS
The best part about most summer food festivals in major cities is they are free, or usually incredibly cheap for a ticket. There’s Tacolandia in Los Angeles. The Taste of Chicago. A beer and bourbon BBQ fest in North Carolina. A lobster festival in Maine (duh.) A food truck festival in DC. There are some food festivals even worth traveling for. Point is, eating for free is cool and so is saving your tax refund money on a plane ticket to go to one of these places.
VIRTUAL REALITY WEED PARTIES
Who says experiences only includes physically going somewhere? For just $45 with the help of virtual reality and cannabis, you can be mentally transported somewhere and game your stoner heart out.
TAKE A ROAD TRIP TO A NATIONAL PARK
If you haven’t heard, the natural world isn’t doing too well because of global warming, so now wouldn’t be the worst time to go and support the NPS. Camping at a national park for the weekend will cost you less than $300 for the whole trip. My suggestions: go to Joshua Tree or Zion National Park. Plus, nature is cool in 2017.
GO TO SAN DIEGO COMIC CON AND NERD OUT
For all the movie and comic book fans out there, a badge to SDCC will only set you back about $45. You can use the rest of your money for transportation and lodging, and in return get to see some of the most anticipated movie trailers of the year and meet your favorite DC and Marvel characters.
A PLAYBOY X HOP PARTY
There’s no party like a Playboy x HOP party. For under $50 (drinks included!) head to one of our themed parties across the country, like our upcoming Hidden Arcade Night or a Speakeasy themed event. Yes, Gatsby would be proud.
