Final Fantasy VII remains Square Enix’s most popular and well-loved game of that series, and now, almost 20 years after the game’s original release on Playstation, FFVII is finally getting a big notch on its merchandising belt: a Monopoly board.
Available for pre-order at Merchoid, there’s not much in the way of details about the game just yet, but like all branded Monopoly games, it’ll be full of locations from Final Fantasy VII in place of Boardwalk and Marvin Gardens. Here’s the description from Merchoid’s page:
Delve into the evolving city of Midgar in search of the latest business opportunities. Perhaps you’ll buy up a string of plots for housing development for the people, or go industrial and build a Mako reactor plant.
So it sounds like, in place of hotels, you’ll be able to max out the productivity of your properties with Mako reactors, the big factories that suck the life energy out of the living planet in Final Fantasy VII. Seems fitting that in Monopoly, you could choose to knowingly ravage the environment, since stopping Mako reactors is, like, the entire thrust of the game’s plot. I bet the little plastic reactors look cool though. The description also hints at the presence of the evil corporation Shinra at play in the game, which probably replaces your usual government/bank/tax-collecting/sending-to-jail entity.
Fans who like collecting Final Fantasy VII stuff will likely find a lot of fun fan service in the game. But if th is Monopoly spin-off wants to truly capture the FFVII spirit, it’ll need to force you to watch a four-minute video of Knights of the Round every time you build a house.
