The throwback jersey craze was huge in the early 2000s. While he was in high school, LeBron James was ruled ineligible after receiving two jerseys—a Wes Unseld Washington Bullets one and a Gale Sayers Chicago Bears one—for free from a Cleveland store. But the hype died down shortly after. Perhaps the final nail in the coffin was Jay Z rapping, “I don’t wear jerseys, I’m 30-plus. Give me a fresh pair of jeans, button up.”

But never underestimate the power of nostalgia. First, there was the great hoopster movement of 2010 that saw vintage basketball jerseys become de rigueur for hipsters attending summer music festivals. More recently, the throwback has been seeing a resurgence in hip-hop circles, with rappers like Fabolous and Meek Mill.

The nostalgia isn’t limited to actual basketball players. Fabolous has rocked a Ray Finkle jersey and now AGame is coming out with a line of throwbacks dedicated to other fictional ballers. The jerseys pay tribute to TV shows such as Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, Saved By The Bell, and Family Matters, and movies like He Got Game, Teen Wolf, Blue Chips, and Above The Rim.

These don’t necessarily represent the greatest basketball stories Hollywood has told—there’s no Hoosiers—but they are some of the most fondly remembered, if only for the ways that they screwed with the Dr. James Naismith’s rules. Who can forget Scott Howard turning into a wolf following the longest loose ball scrum ever? Or Will Smith sinking a shot off the opening tip on Fresh Prince?
