From Harley Quinn to Step Moms, Here Are the Biggest Trends in Porn

From Harley Quinn to Step Moms, Here Are the Biggest Trends in Porn: Warner Bros.

Warner Bros.

In 2016, Americans proved to be the horniest of all countries, leading the march as the foremost country to view Pornhub’s limitless content per capita. Considering that a whopping 91,980,225,000 videos were viewed on the website in 2016 alone, this works out to a dizzying amount of porn—12.5 videos per every person on earth, actually.

Perhaps this is why South Carolina has proposed a bill requiring all computers sold come with software that blocks porn sites from being accessed. Or that the state of Utah wants to sue porn producers for emotional and psychological damages through porn consumption to “protect” our children.

Regardless, for the time being, porn is here to stay and the content has its feet firmly planted in our nation’s soil. And, thanks to Pornhub’s fourth annual year in review, we’re able to recognize and articulate everything there is to know about our international porn viewing habits. We’ve narrowed down the website’s formidable data to the most significant bits.

1. WE LIKE WATCHING PORN ON OUR PHONES
The impact smartphones continue to have on our lives is both profound and somewhat concerning. In 2016, porn traffic from smartphones rose from 53 percent to 61 percent, stealing significant shares from desktop viewership, which fell eight percent from last year. The tablet, however, remained consistent with last year’s stats. As for when we view our smutty material, Pornhub’s insights found that 11 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday are the happiest hours during the week for solo play.

2. VIDEO GAMES ARE A HUGE TURN-ON
Though Lara Croft remained the most searched video game character with 2.5 million annual searches, much of our online fantasies were fuelled by video game newbies—namely, the sultry bunch from Overwatch, IGN’s game of the year. Tracer, the game’s openly LGBTQ character followed very closely behind Croft at 2.4 million searches, with Zelda tallying 1.9 million, D.Va (another Overwatch character) 1.5 million, Misty (from Pokémon, thanks to Pokémon Go) at 1.5 million.

3. HARLEY QUINN BROKE THE INTERNET
It’s no surprise that after the release of the profoundly disappointing flick Suicide Squad, that the film’s only saving grace, Harley Quinn, became the psychotic, bat-wielding woman of our dreams. Leading up to the film’s release, searches on the site for parodies of Harley Quinn increased by 310 percent. Around Halloween, there was a notable 239 percent increase in searches. These two separate instances made Harley the most searched movie character of 2016.

4. THE KARDASHIANS STILL RULE THE PORN SCENE
Despite having just one sex tape (which came out in 2007, no less), Kim Kardashian West is still the most searched for personality—porn star or otherwise—on Pornhub. Last year, Kardashian West was searched for 29 million times. Half-sister Kylie Jenner followed in a distant second with 4.5 million searches and a peak increase of 1073 percent on May 21st, which was around the time news broke of her short split with Tyga. Kardashian West’s influence then spilled over into hubby Kanye’s terrain, provoking searches for Yeezy to peak at 1612 percent around the same time hers did.

5. TRUMP WAS OUR PORN-ELECT AS WELL
On November 9th, after Donald Trump was elected President, porn searches of the controversial leader increased not only for the Donald himself, but the entire Trump family—save for his sons. Searches for Trump increased by 874 percent that day, but these figures paled in comparison to Trumps with boobs. Ivanka saw an increase of 1169 percent, while Melania increased by 1538 percent. But perhaps most surprising is the fact that notably absent daughter Tiffany lead by a mile, with a 2548 percent increase.

6. AMERICANS HAVEN’T EMBRACED VR PORN JUST YET Though only 30 VR videos have been released on Pornhub, research shows that online searches for this type of content continues to grow with each passing month. VR porn has received 38 million searches in the relatively short window of just nine months. Americans however haven’t embraced the idea just yet—at least not when compared to the rest of the world. In fact, North America doesn’t even break the top 10. Who does? China, followed by Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Norway.

7. WOMEN’S PREFERENCES ARE ALL OVER THE MAP
Even with Pornhub’s insights, there’s no way of telling what women want. For example, the top categories searched by women were Lesbian, Big Dick and Threesome. So, nothing there. As for the terms viewed by more women than men? That would be pussy licking, female friendly and lesbian. According to statistics, one in four Pornhub viewers are female, though the United States didn’t even break the top 10 in countries with high proportions of female visitors.

8. AMERICANS SPEND MORE TIME WATCHING PORN THAN MOST COUNTRIES
The international average visit to the site lasts nine minutes and 36 seconds. Americans beat that number considerably at 10 minutes and 15 seconds. But we’re only third in the world in terms of duration. Philippines lead the pack at 12 minutes and 45 seconds, followed by South Africa at 10 minutes and 46 seconds.

9. GAY PORN IS GAINING SERIOUS TRACTION
The proportion of visitors viewing Pornhub’s gay male content in the U.S. has grown almost 50 percent from 2012 to 2016. As of May 2016, more than three percent of all American visitors head straight to the gay male section of the website. Interestingly enough, these insights show that the majority of southern states have a larger percentage of gay viewers compared to northern states. Black, Straight Guys and Bareback were the top three most-searched categories.

10. WE LOVE LESBIANS AND…STEP MOMS
Looking at the U.S. alone, the top-searched terms of 2016 were step moms, lesbian and step sister, which, I don’t know, is kind of weird, no? Concerning categories, the most popular are Lesbian, Ebony and Teen. And lastly, as for what we search more than anybody else in the world, we’ve got the very particular “big booty latina”, followed by “big black dick” and “ebony”.
